Getting around

By far, the easiest way to get around Fairbanks is by car. Of course that you can make the trip without a car but expect it to be very costly if you are dependent on taxis and/or tour operators to get you around. If you choose to stay out at some places about an hour or so out of Fairbanks, where they do have a lot of winter activities, and a basic restaurant. Be prepared, however, for high prices for everything.
The downtown area of Fairbanks to be limited, with only a couple of gift shops or restaurants nearby,. . .though stay in Fairbanks downtown would be easier to getting around without a car.
Northern lights and tours to view will be more available in Fairbanks, and definitely have mushing tours available too. Find tours here!

Car rental

Major car rental companies are located at the airport and downtown.
If you’re arriving in the peak time during aurora viewing or summer months, plan ahead, as most rental companies are pretty much sold out. In the early spring and summer, cars are often not available without reservations, and even if they are, be prepared to pay top-dollar for them, especially four-wheel-drive vehicles.

In winter, it is important to get a 4 wheel or all wheel drive car. The mid-size or larger car with snow tires does help a lot. Even in summer, you have to take a good look at your vehicle and check all tires- a good car is an essential of an overwhelming trip in wilderness!

How old must you be to rent a car in Alaska?
This is more dependent on the car rental company than the state. As long as you have a valid, unrestricted driver’s license, you can drive any car. Renting a car under age 25 is possible, but pricey… Most car rental companies do not let anyone under the age of 25 rents a car. Please call rental company to confirm your reservation before your trip to Fairbanks, Alaska.
